    351W with AOD

Just wondering, what would be a good, tough automatic overdrive transmission to put behind a Ford 351W in a pickup to do some cruising, and probably a bit of towing with??? Preferably something that doesn't take a ton of electronics to make work?????

Check out this page and/or maybe touch base with'em. They came highly recommended when I wanted to use an AOD in my coupe.

Yeah Dave, your title mentions "AOD" and I think it would fit the bill nicely for what you describe, especially built right like Mike points out. I do think that an external cooler is necessary, especially for towing, and that you will need to lock out the OD when towing just about anything - that OD clutch is a band type (as I understand) and it does not take loads well. Once it starts slipping things get hot quickly - my old F150 started shuddering & shaking one day pulling an empty car hauler flatbed down the highway, but luckily it was just hot fluid and settled down once out of OD.

I towed my vette from Florida to Nevada with my AOD out of a 89 Lincoln town car.
It weighed about 6,000 pounds and I went over huge mountains with no trany problems!!!
I've got a guys number that does these kind of set ups all the time, if you want it Dave.

Thanks guys, from what Baumann has on their site, the AODE looks like the way to go.... still deciding what I should do, keep the truck or sell it. If I keep it, then for sure it's going to get an overdrive transmission. I've got a good C6 in the truck now, they're a real good transmission for towing but for just plain old driving the overdrive would sure be nice......

I agree, If you keep it and tow with it at all, then an aod-E would be the cat's pajamas!

    Hey Dave;
I was doing a little reading on the aode are you planning on runing a brain what year is your truck???
From what I was reading their are electronic's that have to be used with that and can be a pain.
So it needs a computer to operate it!!!
I found these guys taking about it.

    Kurt,
Bauman has their own E-Tranny controller that I believe solves the need in spades, plus they do a healthy upgrade on the tranny, too - link here TCS Detailed Product Description - Baumann Electronic Controls, LLC

Hey rspears; My question for Dave is, if his truck is fuel injected because if it's not he's gonna have problems.
Because the brain is gonna need to know thing from the motor to shift right.
This is what I heard from my buddy in Florida that does this stuff all the time.

OK, sorry I did not understand your question had anything to do with EFI. I'll keep my nose out of it. My apology for butting into your info exchange.

Nope, no fuel injection on the truck, there's a few companies around that make a box for controlling the transmission

Hey rspear; your not butting in!!!
This is a learning site, and I am trying to learn too.
I could be mistaken but I don't think this will work with out some kind
of engine management system. I might be wrong though.
Just tried to call Baumann to see but they are gone for the day.
I left them a message though with some questions.

Nope, I think you're exactly right. Trying to marry up two different controllers could be a challenge. I was pretty sure Dave's truck was carb'd, and was not sure you were aware of the Bauman box, which looks to be a good one, and of course Dave's already ahead of me knowing that there are several to choose from.

Yeah, the electronic guys can make a box for just the transmission control, doesn't matter if it has a carb.

Option #2 is even easier. If the electronics and the transmission are too much $$$$$$, I'll just put a Gear Vendors overdrive on it!
