Rebuild cost question TH400
Just curious what you all think a rebuild on a TH400 should cost? Not looking for full race upgrades. Its running behind a chev 350 making about 300hp with a Ford 9" running 3:83s and a 2400 stall converter. I know the gears are to low and will be changed soon I hope. Just curious what a rebuild on this trans should cost. I'm in S. Calif. and prices may be different in other areas. Again, not holding anyone to a price, just trying to get a range so when I go looking I am semi informed. I'm also comparing what a new one would cost from Summit.
I'd also like to hear any tips on what to look for when choosing a shop? I always look for a clean shop but again, just looking for suggestions.
Thanks for you time.

I paid $1300 for a rebuilt 700R4 about six months back, which included the cost of him getting a core tranny, the requisite shift kit to beef it up a bit and a new torque converter. A TH350 or 400 would have been a bit cheaper, but not a ton. Local independent shop that all of the area dealers use for their tranny work. Face to face word of mouth from other gearheads, local auto parts stores, and small independent garages that don't do tranny work themselves has worked best for me. Most small repair shops will do the R&R, but take the tranny to a shop for rework, then warrant the work themselves. That's the shop you want to find.Last edited by rspears; 12-09-2014 at 08:56 AM.

Last time I had a rebuild, it was about $200 shy from a Summit transmission getting freight dropped to my doorstep.
So, the last time I needed a trans, I ordered one, and sold the old one on the cheap.
Seems like no matter which shop I use, the result is the same. Not started as promised, not finished as promised, higher cost than promised, and required return for a leak or other problem.
So far, two summit transmissions, and zero problems. I may never have a transmission rebuilt again.Last edited by firebird77clone; 12-28-2014 at 09:18 AM.

Education is expensive. Keep that in mind, and you'll never be terribly upset when a project goes awry.
