NV4500 mount to SBC?
Hey guys, I'm going back and forth between an LS motor and a SBC for my 67 GMC 1/2t pickup build. I really want a 5 speed transmission, whichever engine I go with. With help from this forum, I decided an NV4500 is probably the trans I want with an LS motor. Will this trans also work with a SBC, without major modifications other then maybe bellhousing? My current trans is the stock 4 speed with granny, and worn out synchros. I really don't want to put a fresh motor in, but still have the worn out stock trans. However, money is tight, so i can't spend alot on fabricating lots of special parts to make things work.
This is my first restoration and I've got alot to learn!
Thanks.67 GMC Pickup, owned since I was 15, driven regularly til 1997, in storage until Oct 2012. SBC 283 from a buddy's 66 Chevelle, stock engine, stock 4 speed tranny with granny gear. Working on a light restoration.

The Novak Guide to the NV4500 Transmission
Here is just one of many informative sites I found with a short Google search "NV4500".

Absolutely agree with Jerry. Buy a donor truck and use EVERYTHING you can out of it, then sell off the glass, interior, wheels and tires, suspension, brakes, differential, driveshaft and sheetmetal to help recoup the cost of the donor. Try to find one of these trucks that has been hit on both sides and totaled....
2001–2006 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD and 3500 and 2007 Silverado Classic
2001–2006 GMC Sierra 2500HD and 3500
They will have the LS motor and the NV4500 transmission. The iron block LQ9 would be a nice find.
Don't forget to swap in the LS radiator, even if you have to cut the core support out of the LS truck and weld it into your truck. Remember, you'll have to re-position your '67 hood latch onto the LS core support. Either that or use hood pins....

Thanks guys, I really looked at the ls swap and kept an eye out for wrecked trucks, but in the end decided I'm sticking with a SBC. The ls swap had to many fabrications and extra purchases required - fuel pump, moving fuel tank out of cab, mounting brackets, headers, etc. I'm still checking to see if the nv4500 will fit the SBC. Goal is to get the truck on the road this summer.67 GMC Pickup, owned since I was 15, driven regularly til 1997, in storage until Oct 2012. NV-4500 first used in 1992 or 1993 in GM pickups. It was the heavy duty 5spd. Special order request on half tons, and standard equipment ( with M/T ) on 3/4 ton up. Was available both 2 and 4wd.. what your looking for in a Chevy truck. 1992-2002 OBS ( 2001 was last year of OBS in 3/4 and 1 tons ). 5spd with a removable bell housing. if you find an aluminum case with an integral bell, that's either a 5LM-60 or an NV-3500 and you want neither of thoseYou don't know what you've got til it's gone
