clutch flight tranny
does anyone remember the clutch flight tranny, the poor mans lenco? it is a 727 mopar automatic tranny with the front sawed off and a clutch added on the front. you launch with the clutch in 1st and push button or manually shift 2nd and 3rd with no clutch. i have been given my fathers 48 anglia gasser drag car. it is a basket case that he has sat on for 30 years. i have all the good nastalgia parts. straight axel front end with the haldibrand rims, front and rear, original moon spun aluminum fuel cell, 427 motor with the clutch flight tranny. it is the B&M model. there was no bell housing. i have contacted a couple performance tranny shops and B&M with no answer on locating a bell housing to mate up to a chevy motor or anyone willing to freshen it up. i also need to know what type clutches and presure plate to use in this application. i know they have a weak link, that is the 1 inch input shaft but i want to restore it to its original gasser form and this tranny is a major part of this restoation. any thoughts, personal experiences, or links to sites with info on this would be greatly appreciated.

Contact this guy, if he's got this part he may have a lead on what you want.

You might try Fairbanks. I used to run one of their clutch turbo setups back when. I still have a three paddle RAM clutch disc and a couple of spare clutch turbo input shafts out in the barn somewhere. I used to paint a line on them and replace when the line twisted 3/4 turn.

Wow, I didn't think I would ever hear someone talking about those again. I had a front engined dragster with a injected BBC and a clutchflite tranny years ago. I used to have to rebuild that thing after every three passes. I used a sintered iron disc, and the pressure plate had weights on the outside edges of the fingers that would put more pressure on the disc the higher the rpm got. I could never get the rpm on the engine up very high before leaving the line cause as the rpm got higher it would push my foot up and engage the clutch. Got that car into the low 9's before selling it. They are very simple to rebuild. I think the bell housing was made by B&M. It was too long ago to remember where I got everything though, but thanks for reminding me of a time when drag racing was easy.Mike Casella
