Thread: Restiching seats with airbags

A seat came in the shop that the airbag blown and was wondering if it was safe to to resew and put back togather,what I need to know is there a special thread that is needed or a special machine to sew the seat. I am worried that it might not blow out if I sew it back up

I would contact the zone office of the manufacturer. If the bag blew a sewn seam, the thread strength could affect the deployment timing of the bag which is critical to the effectiveness of the system. Usually, the bag tears a scored seam in a molded part (like the steering wheel bag cover). There is probably a service bulletin on repair of a deployed bag. CAREFUL! A new bag is very dangerous and can seriously harm you if the bag goes off. As I remember, a steering wheel bag has the capability of lifting 20 lbs 20 feet into the air. Follow all of the manufacturer's procedures.

Jeff I'd be really concerned about liability issues. I do know if a steering wheel airbag deploys the only approved method of repair is replace the bag, steering column and all crash sensors. Exercise the old rule of "Cover your Bum"

I think the answer to your first question is a flat NO. I wouldn't touch it with a 10' pole. It's actually illegal in some states.
